James Sherman Obituary

James C. “Jim” Sherman, 95, of Princeton and formerly of Hazleton, went to his heavenly home on Tuesday, May 22, 2018. He was born on June 2, 1922 in Hazleton, IN to David and Esther (Yaden) Sherman. Jim married Dessie (Lane) on January 6, 1946. They lived 55 years in Hazleton before moving to Princeton. Jim graduated from Hazleton High School in 1941. He went into the U.S. Army in 1942 serving in the European Theatre with the 106 Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadrons. He was discharged as Sgt. Tech 4th Grade in October 1945. Jim received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Jim was presented the French Legion of Honor Medal in France by the French Government in June 2004. He also went on the Honor Flight to Washington DC on October of 2014. Jim retired as a foreman from Hansen Mfg. after 34 years. He is a member of the Hazleton UM Church where he served as Lay Leader, Trustee, and choir member. He also sang in a trio. He is a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Order of Eastern Stars. He is a life member of the American Legion where he served 20 years as Adjutant and he is a life member of the VFW. He was a singer with the Doodle-De-Doers, loved wood working and was a Red Cross volunteer in the Good Samaritan Hospital of Vincennes for 12 years.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Dessie of Princeton; daughter, Sue Leffler (Dale) of Oakland City; 2 sons, Dennis Sherman (Betty) of Hazleton and Byron Sherman (Shari) of Newburgh; 8 grandchildren, Dave Hale of Vincennes, Chris Hale of Francisco, Jason Sherman of Jacksonville, FL, Mandi Schooler of Chandler, Jacki Falkenstein of Carmel, IN, Scott Sherman, Kim Perry and Tina Hutchinson all of Princeton; step-granddaughter, Kim Barker of Evansville; 24 great grandchildren; 5 step-great grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters; great granddaughter, Lauren Hale; and a step grandson, Kevin Leffler.

Funeral service will be held at 12 noon Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton, officiated by Rev. Don Blackard. Burial will follow in Hazleton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday at Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton. There will be a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening. Military graveside service by Retired Military Veterans.
