Jean K. Hunter, 83, of Princeton, formerly of Hebron, Illinois passed away Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at his home in Princeton. He was born on December 17, 1934 in Rockford, IL the adopted son of Paul and Cecil (Butler) Hunter. On January 1965, he married Oleva Masters in Plano, IL. Mr. Hunter enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1953 during the Korean War serving with the 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. Upon discharge, he enlisted into the US Air Force serving a tour in Greenland. After his discharge in 1962 and a fifteen year break in service, he joined the US Army Reserve 85th Division and served with distinction with two brigades and was instrumental in the downsizing during the 1992 merge with the 84th Division. He obtained the rank of Master Sergeant in 1984. Hunter was logistically responsible for 12 different battalions located in Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa. Among his many awards were several Army Achievements and Army Commendations and included the Meritorious Service Award. He retired after 27 years of service at the mandatory age of 60 on December 31, 1994. Mr. Hunter’s formal education was in Woodstock, IL and returned 15 years after graduation. His civic responsibilities include the Woodstock Weather Watch Organization, The Woodstock Auxiliary Communication Organization, coordinator, for Woodstock Emergency Services for the City of Woodstock. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 412. He served as its Commander in 1970 and as Commander of the McHenry County American Legion in 1986. Mr. Hunter also served as the Chef de Gare of Voiture 578 of McHenry County Chapter in 1974. He was a Life Member of Woodstock AmVets and of the Third Marine Division Association. He was an involved member of McHenry Chapter of VietNow until his moving to Indiana. He was on the planning staff of the United Veterans Association and had been elected their first Board Chairman. A refrigeration technician by trade since 1970, Mr. & Mrs. Hunter owned and operated HUNTERS INN restaurant in Woodstock until their move to Hebron in 1979. Mr. Hunter became involved in the Hebron politics serving six years as a Village Trustee. He was then appointed as the Chairman of the Plan Commission for two years and afterwards served as the Village Treasurer. Survivors include his sons, Terry Hunter of Princeton and Russell Hunter (Kelly) of Rockford, IL; daughters, Cynthia Hunter of Rockford, IL and Tresa Schultz (Bill) of Crystal Lake, IL; grandchildren, Amanda, Sami, Karissa, Stephon, Jonathan and Zack; and a special friend, Barbara Lindsay of Vincennes. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 43 years, Oleva Hunter in 2008; sister, Carol; and brother, Robert.
