Joseph Carithers Obituary

Joseph P. Carithers, 98, of Princeton, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2018, rejoining his beloved wife Martha (Smith) Carithers in Heaven on the 71st anniversary of their marriage, at River Oaks Health Campus in Princeton. He was born on October 5, 1919 in Princeton, IN to Ralph and Olive (McClure) Carithers.

Joe farmed for many years and began working for the Gibson County CO-OP and retired in 1981 after farming and working at the CO-OP for 43 years.  He was a lifelong member of the United Presbyterian Church in Princeton, where he served as an Elder for many years and also served as Clerk of Session. He was formerly on the Gibson County CO-OP Board of Directors. As a young man he joined Indiana Rural Youth of Gibson County and was a member of that organization for over 75 years. He served on the Gibson County Extension Board for 30 years, member of the Gibson County and Indiana Farm Bureau for 75 years. He served on the Gibson General Health Foundation Board.  He was a member of Prince Masonic Lodge #231 for over 70 years and member of Scottish Rite Valley of Evansville. Member of the Kiwanis Club and served on the SWIRCA Board of Directors and one year was chosen as “Older Volunteer of the Year” for this district. One year he was chosen by the Jaycees as “Outstanding Farmer of the Year”.

He is survived by his son, Robert P Carithers (Diana) of Evansville; grandchildren, Ryan James Carithers of Boonville and Kelli Marie Carithers of Evansville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha Carithers, October 25, 2014: brothers, Billie Bob, Sam and James Carithers; and sisters, Mary Martha Harrell, Florence Marie Newton and Olive Jean Shoulders

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 3, 2018 at United Presbyterian Church corner of Prince and State Streets in Princeton, officiated by Rev. Vanlal Hruaia.  Burial will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Princeton. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the Church. Masonic Memorial Service will be held a 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Colvin Funeral Home

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gibson General Health Foundation, Princeton, IN 47670.
