Bennie Coomer

Bennie H. Coomer, 98, of Princeton, IN passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at RiverOaks Health Campus in Princeton. He was born July 15, 1928 in Princeton to Thomas H. Coomer and Susie (McLemore) Coomer. Bennie was in the 1949 graduating class of Princeton High School. He was scouted shortly after to play baseball for Fond du Lac Panthers, a Class D affiliate of the New York Yankees playing in the Wisconsin State League. Bennie played two years before being drafted to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict for two years. He also played baseball for the U.S. Army. Bennie married Juanita (Greek) Coomer June 28, 1953 and was blessed with 67 years of marriage before her passing November 9, 2020. He was sworn in the Princeton Police Department in 1956, where he had a 50 years career before retiring in 2006. Bennie served as Chief of Police from 1976-1979 and Assistant Chief of Police from 1980 until retirement. In 2002 he was recognized as the longest active officer in the State of Indiana and had December 14, 2002 declared as Bennie Coomer Day. Bennie was a past member of Faith United Methodist Church and more recently attended First General Baptist Church in Princeton. He enjoyed coaching little league and Babe Ruth league baseball in earlier years. Bennie liked making sure his yard was looking good and keeping it well mowed. He loved spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren.

Bennie was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Juanita Coomer; siblings, Everett Coomer, Bobby Joe Coomer, Nola Clinton, Ruth Davis, and Jack Coomer,

He is survived by his children, Tim (Mary) Coomer, Benita (Dan) Murry, and Stephanie (David) Turpin; grandchildren, Logan (Laura) Adams, Cory (Haley) Adams, Alli (Andrew) Carnahan, Rylee (Nate) Berg, and Rachel (Amanda) Murry; great-grandchildren, Ben, Everly, and Reagan Adams, Avery, Gatlin, and Benson Berg, Easton and Parker Murry, and Owen and Josie Adams.

A funeral service will be held 1 PM Tuesday, August 25, 2026 at Colvin Funeral Home with Pastor Brad Keenan officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Princeton with Military Honors by the Retired Military Veterans . Visitation will be held 11 AM until service time Tuesday at the funeral home.
