Craig R. "Zeke" Smith Obituary

Craig R. “Zeke” Smith left an abundance of family and friends behind on Saturday, June 20th. Zeke was born to Zeke R. Smith and Betty (Dorsey) Smith on November 12, 1954. He will be remembered and missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Maddy Gay (Art) Mitchem, and best friend Jerry Cox.

Zeke left behind his wife of 25 years, Jancey (Welch) Smith, three daughters – Carrejo (Steven) Fox, Jerusha Smith (R.J. Hull) and Elyssa (Tyler) Mason, whom he loved deeply. He also had a special place in the hearts of his six stepchildren – Jared Welch, Brandon, Mike, Patrick, Kristina Curry (Ric Strong) and Kim Douglas (Jeremiah Threet). Zeke is also survived by his sister Cindy (Phil) Hofman, brother Scott (Karen) Smith, as well as nieces and nephews. There are 11 grandchildren that will also miss getting to know such a unique grandpa.

Zeke graduated from Princeton Community High School in 1972 and then attended Vincennes University and Purdue University to study floriculture. He discovered a knack for flowers during his years at Princeton Gardens. He went on to be very proud of being a grower for Smith Greenhouses, where he developed a touch for ferns and mums. Many patrons will remember Zeke from his side-hustle of bartending at such local haunts as The Little Track, The Country Side, and at the local Moose Club where he was a member for many years.

Besides flowers, his interests included football, old movies, and music. Coming from such a musical family, his tastes were wide and varied, from big band to rock and roll, as well as bluegrass.

The family invites his many friends to remember him in a casual celebration on Tuesday, June 30th at 6 PM at Colvin Funeral Home. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 4 PM until service time at the funeral home.

Condolences may be expressed and memories shared online at colvinfuneralhome.com. Colvin Funeral Home is honored to serve the Smith family.
