Dessie I. (Lane) Sherman, 100, of Princeton, passed away Thursday, December 18, 2025 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes. She was born September 9, 1925 in Knox County near Decker to the late Denver Lane and Athel (Sullivan) Lane. Dessie married James Sherman on January 6, 1946 and they were together for 72 years before his passing in 2018. They lived in Hazleton 55 years before moving to the Princeton area. Dessie was a homemaker for 21 years then attended Vincennes University for Data processing to work at Gibson County Bank and as an insurance agent until retirement 20 years later. She volunteered at the Good Samaritan Hospital for 15 years as a Red Cross Volunteer. She was a 50-year member of the Hazleton United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as treasurer for 20 years, a member of VFW Auxiliary in Princeton, and a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star, serving for a year as State Representative for South Dakota and serving as Worthy Matron in 1980. Dessie loved sewing, quilting, crafts, and tole painting, winning many ribbons at the Gibson County Fair over the years. When she was 70 years old, she went to Clown School and was seen at many places as “Adi-Bug”.
Dessie is survived by her children, Sue Leffler (Dale) of Oakland City, Dennis Sherman (Betty) of Hazleton, and Byron Sherman (Shari) of Newburgh; grandchildren, Dave and Chris Hale, Jason and Scott Sherman, Kim Perry, Tina Hutchinson, Mandi Schooler, and Jacki Falkenstein; step-grandchild, Kim Barker; 23 great-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren with another on the way; and 1 step-great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; 5 brothers; great-granddaughter, Lauren Hale; and step-grandchild, Kevin Leffler.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM (CST) Tuesday, December 23, 2025 at Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton officiated by Pastor Don Blackard. Visiting hours will be held Monday from 4 until 7:00 PM (CST) and again on Tuesday from 1:00 PM (CST) until the time of service at the funeral home. The Order of Eastern Star Memorial Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Interment to follow service at Hazleton Community Cemetery.
