May Belle (Hobson) Schmaltz, 92, passed away April 30, 2021 at Linda E. White Hospice House in Evansville. She was born June 19, 1928 in the Cato Community in Pike County to Ray and Lela (Barnett) Hobson. She lived her young life and school days there until she married Gene Schmaltz on April 2, 1945 and moved to Oakland City and lived there the rest of her life. She was a member of the Oakland City First General Baptist Church. She loved being with her family, sewing dolls, and stuffed animals. She attended Ceramics classes for 20 years.
May is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Carolyn Schmatlz of Mitchell, Indiana; daughter and son-in-law, Sondra and Steven McCrary of Oakland City, Indiana; two grandchildren, Julie and James Freeman of Mitchell, Indiana and Derrick and Lesley Schmaltz of Salem, Indiana; and four great-grandchildren, Claire Schmaltz, Ella Schmaltz, Owen Freeman, and Grant Freeman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Lela Hobson; her husband of 53 years, Gene Schmaltz who passed in 1998; and one brother, John Hobson of Decatur, Illinois.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Central Time Thursday, May 6, 2021 at Corn-Colvin Funeral Home in Oakland City officiated by Pastor Alec Hensley. Burial will follow at Montgomery Cemetery in Oakland City. A visitation will be held from 11:00 until the funeral service hour, 1:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home. Per COVID-19 state regulations, masks are encouraged and social distancing is required.
