Sondra “Soni” Jean (Hardiman) Segura of Ft. Wayne, IN gained her angel wings on Friday, December 6, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. She was born September 7, 1949 in Princeton, IN to Delbert and Barbara (Hardiman) Chavis.
Soni graduated from Princeton High School in 1967. She then attended Vincennes University where she received a social work scholarship, St. Francis-Ft. Wayne, Indiana University Purdue University-Fort Wayne, and Ivy Tech- Princeton, IN. Soni started employment with Council on Aging in 1977 and was a van driver and temporary director for 10 years. After relocating to Ft. Wayne, IN in 1987, she was employed at Ft. Wayne State Developmental Center as a Qualified Medication Aide/Psychiatric Attendant where she retired after 18 years of service in 2005, and then employed with Your Friends and Neighbors until 2010. Lastly, she served 5 years at Gibson County ARC as a Direct Support Professional until 2015.
Soni was a member of New Life Fellowship Church , Ft. Wayne, IN under the leadership of Pastor David Shafer. Her passion in life was volunteering and helping others. Soni was a volunteer for Salvation Army as an intake staff during Christmas season, Volunteer Center, United Way, Volunteer Lawyer Program as a guardian, and Wings of Hope - all in Ft. Wayne. She was a CASA volunteer in Princeton where she received The 2018 CASA Volunteer of the Year Award. She was also a World Vision Sponsor; a member of NEINAC Guardianship Council, AARP, Retired Indiana Public Employee Association, a financial secretary for Hanna Creighton Neighborhood Association, Eastern Star, Carrie Davis #40, Martha Demerci #18, Queen of South, Queen of Sheba, and Nurses Guild.
Soni is survived by her daughter, Yolanda Jones Tolbert; Ex-Husband, Maximo Segura; sisters, Delberta Hardiman and Melodie Chavis; brothers, Elbert (Roxanne) Chavis and Shelby Roberts; special daughter, NaTasha Benson; special sisters, Valarie Ackerson, Cora James, Melody Jones, and Angel Tinnel; grandchildren: LaKendra, Breanna, and Cassandra Tolbert, Tationna Grandberry, Quanavia and Octavia Bell, Breanna Hart, Colette Harris, Kayla Morgan, Shalandria Morris, Mandeline, Jaysha, and Jarrell James of Fort Wayne; Destiny Steele, Trysten Hill, and Ja'La Franklin of Indianapolis; Ashlyn Switzer Jones of Terre Haute; Dreveon Bell and Uriah Vironet of Atlanta; Tommy and Tyne Payne, Jasmine Jones, Victoria Johnson of Princeton; Lajazuah Nelson Jones of Evansville; Terrance Hardiman of Newbury; great-grandchildren; and host of family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Tommy Jones; brothers, Kenneth “Point” Hardiman and Delvert (Celia) Kearns Chavis; sisters, Patricia “Patty” (Arnold) Creech and Janet (Bruce) Dougan; special sisters Gloria "Cookie" Morris and Nancy (Richard) Wheatly; special daughter LaToya Morgan; and special grandsons KeSaun Hunter and Jaylin James.
A funeral service will be held 12:00 PM Saturday, December 21, 2024 at Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton, IN with Pastor David Shafer officiating.
