Stephen Hughes, entered his eternal rest on Saturday, March 30, 2024 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Conner; brothers, Pete Hughes (Beth) of Petersburg and Dan Hughes (Lisa) of Lake Placid, Florida; and a large number of nieces and nephews.

Steve was born in Michigan City, Indiana on January 3, 1945. His formal education was jumpstarted by his beloved aunt, Grace Beazley. He attended Oakland City College and began his teaching career in Crossville, Illinois, where he met his wife. Steve received his Master’s Degree at Ball State University and taught biology and chemistry in Alton, Illinois, then back home in the Pike County School System. He ended his working career with the Indiana Department of Transportation. Steve had a deep love of God, home, and country. He attended Union Community Church and served in a leadership role of the Union Volunteer Fire Department for many years. Having a true “cowboys’ heart”, he enjoyed riding horses especially his “Top Tater Bars” in younger years. Steve also enjoyed watching and rewatching his collection of western and action films, cutting the grass, and fighting with his lawn mower. He was well known for his wry sense of humor, which will be sorely missed.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 am EDT on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at Union Community Cemetery in Union, IN.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Union Community Cemetery, C/O Pastor Kevin Easton, 116 E. Clark St., Princeton, IN 47670.
