Sue Ellen Barton, 88, of Petersburg, IN was reunited in Heaven with her husband and son Wednesday, August 21, 2024. She was surrounded by loved ones singing I’ll Fly Away as she was welcomed with open arms. Sue Ellen was born January 25, 1936 in Princeton, IN to the late Lestle Atkinson and Ruth (Swain) Atkinson.
Sue Ellen was a graduate of Mt. Olympus High School and served in many positions over the years in the Alumni Association. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Tabor General Baptist Church; where she served as a past treasurer and song leader for 50+ years. Sue Ellen was a member of the Peace Notes Gospel group with her son, Derek Barton; they performed at surrounding churches and special occasions events. She loved to sing old church hymns and listen to music.
She was an avid shopper and liked decorating, especially for church parties. Sue Ellen and her husband really stood out from the crowd! You would never see her without her big smile, perfect hair, impeccable make-up, stunning jewelry, and coordinating outfits to Marvin. Sue Ellen was a proud homemaker whose passion in life was loving and caring for her son Derek. She taught him to sing at a young age, supported him in all of his endeavors; which included little league, band, and swing choir. Sue Ellen had a life well lived and will be deeply missed by so many!
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lestle and Ruth Atkinson; husband, Marvin Barton; son, Derek Barton; and brother-in-law, William ‘Bill’ Huey.
Sue Ellen is survived by her sister, Gloria Huey of Sandborn; nephew, Vaughn (Barb) Huey of Sandborn; loved as a daughter-in-law, Gloria Reinhart of Ft. Branch; her son, James (Christine) Reinhart of Owensville; and their daughter, Lexus.
